Close up photo of the Town Hall in Cicero, IndianaCicero, Indiana, located due north of Indiana state capitol Indianapolis and Noblesville, is a nice little Midwestern town with a population of 4,414 in 2006. Original settlers in the town go back as far as 1830, and the town was platted in 1834.

Morse Reservoir forms the focal point of most of its residential area, but Cicero is probably best known as the burial place of Ryan White, the national poster chide for HIV/AIDS.

Ryan was kicked out of school because of his HIV infection, which he contracted through a contaminated blood treatment for his condition, like so many others in this sad epoch of humanity. This erupted into a high-profile legal fight against the public school system. It was during this melee that Ryan White became the famous spokesman for AIDS research and for educating the public about it. He died just before graduating from high school.

Storm over Cicero, IndianaAs did many of its small-town neighbors, Cicero experienced some success in its early years due to the plentiful natural gas reserves found throughout the area. Other businesses that became important to the prosperity of the town include a saw mill, glass factories, agriculture, and furniture and boot manufacturing.

A major stream called Cicero Creek cuts through this pretty little town. The covered “Red Bridge” thatWelcom to Cicero, Indiana sign spanned it for years was a landmark, and is now only a memory. The streets of Cicero were brick-paved in the early 1900s, now a quaint memory as well.

Today the town is flourishing right along with the high level of growth and prosperity of all the towns in Hamilton County, deemed one of the fastest-growing in the nation. Cicero is a busy and happy place, with self-sufficient amenities, ongoing events such as a kids’ carnival, holiday festivities and the big city of Indy just to the south for kicking up one’s heels.
