Cicero, Indiana glass artist Ben Johnson has racked up several distinctions for himself over the course of his career. For example, his work was chosen as the inaugural exhibition for the spiffy new Indianapolis art space, Gallery 924, in October of 2010. That particular Indianapolis event was also the Cicero artist’s very first official showing in Indiana.
Firsts seem to follow Ben Johnson around. A student at the Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass in Ball State University, Johnson received that institution’s very first Master of Fine Arts degree. He received his BFA from Ohio’s Kent State University and supplemented his education by studying in several other academies specializing in the tricky mastery of glass, including the Corning Museum of Glass and the Scuola del Vetro Abate Zanetti in Italy.
His work as a contemporary glass artist landed him the honor of creating the 2011 Governor’s Arts Awards for the Indiana Arts Commission, to be presented in the Fall of this year. The IAC has been supporting art in Indianapolis and other cities in Indiana for over 40 years.
Johnson’s sculptures are born out of his interest in color theory and texture. Though they are basically abstract, they remind the viewer of occurrences in nature and provide the viewer with a glimpse into the creative force itself, which manifests order in the world of form out of seeming chaos.
Ben Johnson‘s highly creative, contemporary glass sculptures have been displayed throughout the United States in several museums and other venues. Along with producing his own art, he also teaches the subject at the Indianapolis Art Center. Due to his increasingly high-profile career, Ben Johnson is one of the better-known people in Cicero.
