Cicero Things To Do: Marathons, Fireworks, and More
Cicero, Indiana is a small town located just north of Indiana state capital Indianapolis, close to Noblesville, Sheridan, and Arcadia. As part of Hamilton County, Cicero events and Cicero attractions are often overshadowed by larger, better funded activities in neighboring cities Noblesville and Carmel, not to mention the metropolitan variety of downtown Indianapolis, but there are plenty of things to do in Cicero to hold any visitor’s attention for a long time.
A number of unique Cicero events lend an air of festivity to the small town and top the list of Cicero things to do every year. Every town has some sort of 4th of July celebration, but Cicero’s Lights Over Morse Lake is far more organized and expansive than your usual 4th of July parade. Lights Over Morse Lake is actually several different events rolled into one that culminate in the huge fireworks spectacular that lights up the entire lakefront.

There’s a massive parade that begins at Cicero’s community park and wends its way through downtown Cicero, replete with public officials, fire trucks, marching bands, dance troupes, and more. Lights Over Morse Lake also includes a music festival, featuring both local Cicero music and Indianapolis music on the big stage. The lineup from past years has included country artists, acoustic artists, modern rock artists, and more. For Cicero children, Lights Over Morse Lake features the Kids Carnival and Arts & Crafts Fair. The carnival includes tons of fun carnival games like the dunk tank, duck pond, a craft station, putt-putt, and even a rock climbing wall.
For Indianapolis sports enthusiasts, one of the top new things to do in Cicero is the Morse Mini Marathon. The first Morse Mini was run in 2009 and met with great enthusiasm from runners and officials alike. The course takes runners to see the sights of beautiful Hamilton County; participants race through downtown Cicero, weave through fields and forests, jog alongside the Morse Reservoir, and finish up at Hamilton Heights High School, the hub of secondary Cicero education. Participants in 2009’s inaugural race came from as far away as New Mexico, and some called it “the best course” they’ve run. The Morse Mini is a worthwhile Cicero thing to do for fans of the Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini-Marathon.
For a much more mellow tour of the countryside surrounding Cicero, the Nickel Plate Arts Trail might be a better fit than the Morse Mini Marathon. The Nickel Plate Arts Trail is a popular Cicero thing to do for lovers of Indiana pastoral scenes and Cicero art. Winding its way through Fishers, Atlanta, Arcadia, Cicero, and Tipton, the Nickel Plate Arts Trail allows walkers, bikers, and joggers to experience the unique beauty of Central Indiana. More than just a hiking trail, visitors can drive the trail, ride a train through the scenic countryside, or even tame the White River in a kayak. Dotted throughout the trail are tons of local artists and shops, selling pies, paintings, crafts, furniture, and much more, making the Nickel Plate Arts Trail an excellent thing to do for those interested in Cicero shopping.
After a day of roaming the trails and experiencing all the fun things to do in Cicero, why not take a break and stop by a Cicero restaurant? A visit to one of these restaurants, most of them locally owned and operated, is one of the most relaxing Cicero things to do, providing good food, drink, and company at reasonable prices. Two of the most popular Cicero restaurants are Jesse’s Sports Grille and Alexander’s On the Water. Jesse’s Sports Grille is the perfect place to catch all the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, and Indiana Ice action you could hope for; this Cicero bar features eight massive flat screen TV’s, a tantalizing food menu, and a broad drink menu. Alexander’s On the Water is a popular stopover for Cicero children; located just off the Morse Reservoir, this ice cream shop scoops 16 different flavors of high quality ice cream, fantastic for those hot, muggy days in the summer.
And if you run out of things to do in Cicero, there’s always the might of the Circle City just to the south. The wide array of Indianapolis nightlife, Indianapolis bars, and Indianapolis music venues should be enough to keep any bored Indiana resident satisfied for a long while. In Cicero, there are more things to do than you might expect. Several unique events like the Morse Mini Marathon and the Lights Over Morse Lake 4th of July celebration draw visitors from miles around and make Cicero a pretty happening place during July and September. The Nickel Plate Arts Trail is a never ending thing to do in Cicero; it would take months to see everything there is to see along the 30 mile trail. Finally, the perfect day out in Cicero is capped by a visit to one of the many fine Cicero restaurants. If you’re creative, you’ll never run out of Cicero things to do.
